Instead of following the dictates of his fellowship, Adam's 'research' becomes a meditation on the possibility of the genuine in the arts and beyond: are his relationships with the people he meets in Spain as fraudulent as he fears his poems are? Is poetry an essential art form, or merely a screen for the reader's projections? A witness to the 2004 Madrid train bombings and their aftermath, he needs to decide whether he participates in historic events or merely watch them pass him by. American author Ben Lerner talks about Leaving the Atocha Station, his first novel narrated by a young man living outside his usual experience.Īdam Gordon is a brilliant, if highly unreliable, young American poet on a prestigious fellowship in Madrid, struggling to establish his sense of self and his relationship to art.

The interplay between words and pictures was an instant hit with us both. Once, twice, many times over, he could not get enough and neither could I. One day he brought “One Fish Two Fish” and “Green Eggs and Ham” from his pre-school library and we read them aloud. My son’s toddler years were immersed in reading vintage Russian picture books from our home library. It took me a very long time to discover his books, even though I was into reading and children’s literature all my life. If you are anything like me 20 years ago, when I had just moved to Australia from a non-English speaking Soviet Union, you would never have heard of Dr. I dare say that any translation of the Seussian signature wordplay for non-English speakers, would be near impossible. “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” should be part of every Christmas reading list in the English-speaking world. 5/26/2023 0 Comments Ithaca claire north reviewI was intrigued when I heard that Claire North would be switching it up and moving to a new genre from her traditional sci-fi arena, but she treats this subject matter the same as she does her wild sci-fi concepts: with great care for worldbuilding (here, mostly historical details and musings on the place of women in Ancient Greece), character, and theme. Or, maybe some people do, but I don’t know who they are. I almost feel like I want to re-read this before I write a review so I can get my thoughts more in order, but nobody has time for that. The undercurrent of female rage and sorrow was pleasing and upsetting at the same time. I really, really liked this! Claire North’s writing style translated extremely well to retelling Greek mythology. Charlotte and her husband faithfully represent an older generation who while set in their ways, are willing to try to adapt to their younger grandchildren. However, I believe the Home to Heather Creek series breaks that mold and I have found it one of the most comforting and engaging set of stories that I have ever read. For those reasons alone I usually stay way from these type of series. I get wary sometimes that the flow of the story will be broken up when something that happens in one novel never gets mentioned again or that there's an endless storyline that keeps going on in 20 books just to keep the continuity. Multi author series can sometimes be a challenge because there can be lack in continuity, characters don't show up in every book, and different personalities appear with each different author. Will they be able to help out the three struggling city children who feel out of place and alone on the farm or will history repeat itself and they leave just like Denise did? Even though they haven't taken care of children in years, they want to do right by Denise, who left home at an early age after a disagreement. Now they must take care of Denise's three children Sam, Emily and Christopher. What was a pleasant life on a Nebraska farm with her husband has now been rocked by news of her only daughter's death. Charlotte Stevenson's world has been turned upside down. 5/26/2023 0 Comments The last world christoph ransmayrIt was published in four volumes from 1868 to 1869 by Smith, Elder & Co. She's even pleasantly surprised when her arch enemy, Ethel Hallow, drops in (from her broomstick) as Mildred rescues her cat from a tree. She's worked on the most wonderful project over the holidays and she's certain that everyone is going to be impressed. Mildred Hubble isn't usually quite so keen to go back to Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches on the first day of term, but today it's different. It's a school-based adventure story with illustrations by the author. Summary: The fifth book in The Worst Witch series will delight any early reader although it's probably more for girls than boys. While the debut author has total command over Wren’s agonizing present, she has a harder time with her back story, in particular with an inconsistency in her relationship with her parents that does not seem entirely justified by her psychic myopia. Wren’s first-person, present-tense narration is convincingly self-hating and claustrophobic her emotional journey lurches through her numbness and denial toward self-acceptance. McNamara makes the most of the stark setting, taking readers and Wren on long runs through woods and along the coastal rocks. Refreshingly, Cal is not the agent of her healing equally wounded, he needs her help as well. Her father, anxious to give her something to do, sets her up with a “job” helping Cal that turns into romance. There she meets Cal, also on the lam from life he has multiple sclerosis and has temporarily dropped out of his architecture program at Cornell. Readers meet Wren in the fall she should be at Amherst, but after a period of elective mutism following the accident, she decided to take refuge with her artist father at his home in Downeast Maine. Everything changed for Wren when her boyfriend was killed in an automobile accident that she survived. 5/25/2023 0 Comments Blue moon noël novelWith the approaching blue moon heralding her only window for travel, Ever is forced to decide between turning back the clock and saving her family from the accident that claimed them-or staying in the present and saving Damen, who grows weaker each day.
